Directors Statement: As a Stunt Coordinator & Performer for a decade within the Film and TV industry, I recognised the importance of understanding and predicting the movement between the camera and the actors when shooting a successful fight scene. I’ve noticed that it seems to be an area that is often overlooked and not captured with the maximum impact. With this in mind one of my goals approaching ‘Johnny Dragon’ was to break the mold of how to capture fight scenes and highlight the many ways to capture each scene with maximum impact to the audience.
My aim is to immerse audiences into a visually stunning world that pushes the boundaries of blending stunt choreography and cinematography. Creating scenes where the story and emotions are not only told by the characters, but also by their environment, filming techniques, lens choices and score.
We used different film stock, multiple lens choices and various camera operating techniques to separate each location of ‘Johnny Dragon’. This creates a unique visual experience for each scene as we move through the film. And creates an effect of progressing through different levels of the game that turns out to be ‘Johnny Dragon’.
Separating each scene with their our cinematic style was a key point of focus for myself and cinematographer J.P Quill. The best way to achieve this was by shooting on Kodak 16mm & 35mm film. Shooting on film not only adds a world of beauty but also allowed us to achieve all speed ramps, double exposures, step printing and many other effects in camera. Showcasing the magic of film.
‘Johnny Dragon’ kicks off in a whacky world with no explanation to the audience. I wanted to leave the audience confused at stages. Questioning the quirky world that these characters are fighting in. With their reality decreasing as the short pushes on with relentless pace.
Keeping a creative and playful theme, along with a retro feel and plenty of homage to old school action films. I aimed to create a bold short that will stand out and give audiences a breath of fresh air!
